1.
It was cold and
rainy until the day we left. I honestly
didn’t mind because I was dressed for the weather. If I had fallen down, I would have rolled
away like a dung beetle because I had on so many layers.
2.
Despite the weather,
people ate outside. I frankly didn’t get
this, but almost every restaurant had outside seating with occupied seats.
3.
We saw more
racial diversity in Brussels than anywhere else on the trip. The Blacks (I can’t use the term African
American since we weren’t in America) were very handsome and very black,
racially unpolluted by the doings of American slave owners.
4.
People from
Brussels can’t give directions in their own city. It’s as if you asked Americans in Time Square
where the Theater District was, and they replied, “Never heard of it.” The
natives are friendly and helpful, just directionally challenged. They couldn’t find body parts unless their
hands were on them.
5.
It is a very
expensive city. We were given
complimentary coupons for drinks at our hotel.
Mine cost about $24 and Dan’s cost $12.
Our breakfast, which was included, cost about $40 each. It had a decent
variety, but the ship’s breakfast was much better.

It was delightful
to be in a French- speaking city. The
second official language is Dutch but most people used French. Dutch is more guttural even than German. Dan took French in high school and I had one
year in college. Amazingly we were both
able to understand and speak it.
